A Brief History of Zhytomyr

Zhytomyr, one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, has a rich and diverse history that dates back over a thousand years. Founded in the early 9th century, it was originally a settlement of the Slavic tribes and played a significant role in the region’s trade routes.

The famous Czech Slavic scholar Pavel Josef Šafařík argued that the ancient settlement, which would become Zhytomyr, emerged as a center for the tribe of the Zhytichs, part of the Drevlians tribal union. The name of the city—"peace of the Zhytichs"—as well as that of the tribe itself, originated from the important crop cultivated in the region: rye, which has been grown here since ancient times.
There is evidence that in ancient times, rye and barley were even sown in the city center. It was said of the city: "peace and rye," "peace of the Zhytichs." It is also possible that Zhytomyr is a shortened form of the word "zhivotomir," symbolizing a peaceful and tranquil life.

In the 12th century, Zhytomyr became part of the Kievan Rus, a powerful medieval state. Following the decline of Kievan Rus, the city faced various invasions and was later ruled by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

During the 18th century, Zhytomyr developed into an important administrative and cultural center. The Russian Empire took control in the late 18th century, and the city continued to grow, seeing significant industrial and economic expansion.

In the 20th century, Zhytomyr experienced the upheavals of the World Wars and the Soviet era, which brought both challenges and development.

During the war, about 40 percent of the housing stock was destroyed, nearly all enterprises were impacted, and engineering communications, including the railway station, tram depot, and power plant, suffered significant damage. It was only in the late 1950s that the city's population returned to pre-war levels.

After the proclamation of Ukraine's independence, the city was granted the status of one of the 24 regional centers.

Zhytomyr embraced its cultural heritage and modern identity.
